Receive Comfortable, Relaxed Treatment with Sedation Dentistry

For patients who are anxious about receiving treatment or are undergoing more extensive procedures, Dr. Randall P. Prince can provide oral conscious sedation to help them comfortably receive the care they need. We use sedation dentistry at our Dyersburg, TN, practice to ensure our patients can receive the vital care they need in a comfortable environment based on trust and relaxation. For many patients, their fears and anxieties about going to the dentist prevent them from getting much needed care. Not only can these fears cause them to avoid routine care like exams and cleanings, but they may also skip treatments for more serious conditions.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses of some form of anti-anxiety medication to help patients feel relaxed and at ease during dental procedures. While there are a number of different types of sedation available, Dr. Prince has offered oral conscious sedation since 1996. In general, he reserves sedation for more intensive procedures, such as root canal therapy or dental implant surgery. However, for patients with severe phobias, he may recommend sedation for more straightforward procedures like dental cleanings or fillings to ensure a comfortable treatment experience.

How Sedation Affects You

Oral conscious sedation can provide minimal to moderate sedation, depending on the dosage taken. With a minimal dose, you will remain fully alert, but feel calm and relaxed. A more moderate dose may cause you to slur your words and even feel euphoric while you remain conscious enough to respond to directions. Even the effects of minimal sedation can take a while to wear off, so you must have someone else drive you to and from your appointment.

How is Sedation Administered?

Prior to prescribing an oral sedative, Dr. Prince will take your vital signs and thoroughly review your medical history. Based on this information, as well as the type of procedure and your personal level of anxiety you feel, he will prescribe the appropriate sedative. He will provide you with detailed instructions on how much of the medication to take and when.

In general, we instruct most patients to take their sedative about 30 minutes prior to the procedure. Patients with more severe anxieties may need to take an additional dose the night before treatment. Dr. Prince will let you know what you can expect with your sedative and any potential side effects.

Oral conscious sedation can help you undergo vital treatment without anxiety or fear.

Side Effects and Benefits

Oral conscious sedation is a safe, proven treatment option with typically only mild side effects. As the medication wears of, you may experience some negative reactions, such as nausea, but this is often very minor and fades quickly. We have over 20 years of experience providing patients with this treatment, and can choose the right medication and dosage for your needs.
